If you love the ability to be able to go off-road then the Wrangler is the Jeep for you. Furthermore, if you want the best off-roading the Wrangler has to offer, you want the Rubicon edition. If you want to take the whole team, get the Unlimited Rubicon!
You’re spoiled for choice with the latest Wrangler. The 2018 Jeep Wrangler JK comes in two and four-door variants and has three different trim levels from which to choose. You can get the Sport, the Sahara or the Rubicon.
The base Sport package gets you a rugged Jeep that has a windshield that folds down, metal doors that can be removed, and hand crank windows. There is cloth upholstery, a regular steering wheel, and a height adjustable driver’s seat. You also have cruise control available and you get an eight-speaker sound system that includes a CD player and an auxiliary audio jack.
If you get the Unlimited, you get a larger gas tank. Get the Power Convenience Package, you get power windows and locks, key less entry, heated/power mirrors, a security system, and auto-dimming mirrors. If you decide to go with the Cold Weather Package you get remote start and heated seats.
With the Sahara, not only do you get all of the Power Convenience items listed above standard, but you also get 18-inch alloy wheels, and LED headlights and fog lights. The hood has some added insulation and you get AC with this option too. For your convenience and comfort, you get a leather-wrapped steering wheel and satellite radio.
Why the Rubicon?
If you are more focused on going off-road, then the Rubicon is the trim level you want. The Rubicon gives you special 17-inch alloy tires. You also get an upgraded transfer case and a lower crawl ratio. You have electronic locking front/rear differentials, a front sway bar that can be disconnected electronically, rock rails, automatic LED headlamps, and under the hood insulation. Some of the features that you get as standard include AC, 115-volt outlet, satellite radio, and leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifting knob. The Power Convenience Group will come standard if you choose the four-door Rubicon Unlimited and it’s optional on the two-door.
The limited-slip rear differential is something that is optional for the Sport and the Sahara. If you choose the Sahara or the Rubicon, you can also choose to get automatic climate control, leather upholstery, and heated front seats.
For every model, you have the option of getting a nine-speaker Alpine sound system, the Connectivity Group, and an upgraded version of the Uconnect touch screen.
What’s Under the Hood?
No matter the options or trim level you choose for your 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, you get a 3.6-liter V6 powerplant engine that gives you 285 horsepower and 260 pounds per foot of torque. Four-wheel drive is standard. The Rubicon is the only trim level that gives you the unique short gearing and the upgraded transfer case for an extremely low crawl ratio. You can have a six-speed manual transmission with hill assist that comes standard or you can choose to get a five-speed automatic with hill start assist and hill descent control as an option. Towing is also an option but keep in mind that the Unlimited only tows up to 3,500 pounds.
One of the greatest things about the Jeep besides its exterior look is that the interior is simple and straightforward. This is the vehicle you want if you want to get the job done every time. You get a bit of a rougher ride on the tarmac with a Jeep, but you can do anything with your 2018 Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited Rubicon.
If you want to get out and have an adventure this summer then go get yourself a Jeep Wrangler for the ultimate in automotive fun.
Performance and Handling
Under the hood, the Wrangler JK Unlimited Rubicon is powered by a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine, delivering 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a five-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission, the powertrain provides sufficient acceleration for both highway cruising and off-road crawling.
On paved roads, the Wrangler’s handling is predictable, though its solid front and rear axles contribute to a bouncy ride compared to modern SUVs. Steering is precise but requires more effort at low speeds. Where the Rubicon truly shines is off-road—its electronically locking front and rear differentials, disconnecting sway bar, and 4:1 low-range transfer case make it nearly unstoppable on rocky trails, sand dunes, and muddy paths.
Off-Road Capability
The Rubicon trim is purpose-built for extreme off-roading. It comes equipped with Jeep’s Rock-Trac 4×4 system, which includes heavy-duty Dana 44 axles and a 4.10 axle ratio for optimal torque distribution. The electronic sway bar disconnect allows for greater wheel articulation, while the 10.2 inches of ground clearance and 32-inch tires ensure minimal obstacles stand in its way.
Water fording is another strong suit, with a rated depth of 30 inches. The approach (44.4°), departure (40.5°), and breakover (25.4°) angles are best-in-class, allowing the Rubicon to navigate steep inclines and deep ruts with confidence. Whether traversing Moab’s slickrock or crawling through dense forests, the Wrangler JK Unlimited Rubicon proves itself as a true off-road champion.
Safety and Reliability
Safety features include standard anti-lock brakes, stability control, and multiple airbags. However, the Wrangler’s high center of gravity makes it more prone to rollover risks compared to conventional SUVs. Owners report strong long-term reliability, though routine maintenance is essential to keep the drivetrain and suspension in peak condition.
Final Thoughts
The Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited Rubicon is a no-compromise off-roader that excels in rugged environments while remaining practical for daily use. Its timeless design, robust engineering, and unparalleled trail capability make it a favorite among adventure seekers. While it may lack the refinement of modern SUVs, its raw, go-anywhere spirit is unmatched. For those who prioritize off-road performance and open-air freedom, the Wrangler JK Unlimited Rubicon remains an unbeatable choice.
