CAT Cut Off Criterias for Admission in IIMs and Others

CAT results will be tentatively declared online by IIM Calcutta in the second week of January. Using the user id and password provided at the time of CAT registration, candidates can check their results. CAT results will be shown in form of scorecard which displays the percentile and section wise and overall score. To know about the cutoff criteria in order to get admission in IIMs, it is important to know about the CAT Syllabus i.e. how the syllabus is divided into sections and sub-sections. This is also important to understand what minimum score is required to get admission in IIMs.

CAT Syllabus is divided into three sections VARC, DILR & QA. CAT Syllabus 2018 is further subdivided into sub-sections as VARC is divided into topics on Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension. DILR is divided into Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning. Thus, CAT 2018 Syllabus is based on the test paper patterns which has questions from all these sections.

In Common Admission Test, what matters is percentile. The percentile is the percentage of candidates who have scored marks less than you. Thus if 100 students appeared for the exam and you get 90 percentile that means 90 students have scored marks less than scored by you. Depending upon the difficulty of the exam, candidates securing 100 can also get the 99+ percentile and sometimes even 200 marks are not sufficient to get 99+ percentile. Even if scores are considered to assess the performance, it depends on a lot of factors as well such as difficulty level of the paper, colleges you want to choose, the college cut off etc.

In 2017, the topper secured 232.32 marks and scored 100 percentile. To get admission in top IIMs, the score should be 200+. With a score of 120, 90 percentile can be secured. To get admission in top IIMs it is not the rule to score 99 percentile. Many factors are considered by the committee before calling a candidate. Many a time it happens that a candidate securing 91 percentile gets a call from top IIMs, it happens because the candidates have some great work experience or any other criteria that fit getting admission in IIMs.

The minimum cut off criteria in which candidates got a call for GDPI round is:

General – 90.99 percentile
SC/ST – 73.21 percentile
Non-Creamy OBC – 81.15 percentile
DA – 80.48 percentile

There is no fix criterion to know the good score for CAT. Below is the table that shows the relationship between score and percentile. The scores or percentile varies year to year.
