Cooking Tips for popular Bengali Fish Curry ilish Jhaal and Jhol

Ilish is the Queen of Fishes. It is oily & more tasty then other Fishes. Many of us are fan to the taste of Ilish Fish Dishes. In week-end from many bengali families you can found the smell of ilish curry. Ilish curry is one of my favorite dish. All my family members like this Curry. Generally in a month twice we eat Ilish Jhaal. My mother is an expert to prepare this. Here let me share how to prepare this popular Bengali fish curry recipe.

Ingredients (Ilish Jhol)

  • 4 to 5 pieces ilish Fish
  • One potato, Cut into ½ inches pieces
  • One eggplant cut into 1 inch pieces
  • Free Green Chillies, Cut in from one side
  • Few Black Cumin
  • Cumin powder
  • Turmeric Powder
  • Mustard Oil & Salt

First add some Salt & Turmeric Powder to Fish pieces. Rub it to mix powders properly. Heat 2 tablespoon Mustard Oil & then we are going to fry the Fish pieces. Then put the fishes in hot mustard oil. Wait some time let the fish pieces get dark brown from the view. Once it is done take the fish pieces to a plate.

Now add some mustard oil to kadai. After oil boil put potato pieces. Fry it like fishes. When potato pieces get half fried put eggplant pieces and again start fry. Once it is done remove it to a plate.

Add some mustard oils to kadai. Put black Cumin, few Cumin powder and 2 green chillies. After few times when chillies are soft add fried potato & eggplant pieces. Mix it properly. Fry for 2 to 3 minutes more. Then add cumin power & turmeric powder. Fry it for a minute with medium heat. To boil well now a glass of water then salt to this. Wait up-to it boil well. Once it boil for 2 to 3 minutes added fried fishes pieces.

You can add water and salt according to the need. Keep the Curry boil for minimum 5 minutes. Before switch of the gas. Add some Dhania Patra for good smell.

Ingredients (Ilish Jhaal)

  • 4 to 5 pieces ilish Fish.
  • Turmeric Powder
  • Salt & Mustard Oil
  • 2 onions
  • 2 tomatoes
  • 4 to 5 Green Chillies
  • Mustard 50gm
  • Garlic pieces & Jeera

In mixer put mustard, jeera, 8 to 9 garlic pieces, 1 onion and 2 red chilly. Mix this as masala.

Switch on the Gas, put the kadai. Add some mustard oil. Wait up-to the oil get heat. Then Put some 4 to 5 green chillies. Cut onions like the general and add this with green Chillies. After onion get fried, put tomatoes. When tomatoes get fried, Add half spoon turmeric power and one spoon salt. You can change the amount of salt according to the need. Then add a glass of water & mix it properly. Let it boil for 5 to 10 minutes. Now add masala we prepared before. Wait up-to the masala mixed water boiled. Add the non fried raw fishes. Boil up-to the water contents vaporized from the recipe. Keep it gravy. After completed add some mustard oil, Dhania Patra & Green Chilly at the top. Now your recipe Ilish Jhaal Completed.
